Delaware’s Freedom Suits
Spend an afternoon at the museum on August 22nd
The term “freedom suits” refers to lawsuits that were filed by enslaved people against their enslavers in court. Hundreds of these suits are recorded in Delaware, detailing the struggles of individuals and families fighting for freedom. What do Delaware’s freedom suits reveal about the lives, values, and experiences of those who wrote them? To answer this question and better understand this period of Delaware history, the presentation will offer specific examples from Sussex County as well as an overview of findings from Delaware as a whole.
This presentation is by one of our summer interns, Brayden Moore a rising Senior, a History Education Major, Museum Studies Minor at the University of Delaware.
Come for the guided museum tour at 2 pm and stay to hear Brayden Moore's talk at 3:30.
